Modern paint is a better at resisting moisture and stains than paint from a few generations ago. For a long time only glossy paint was used in bathrooms and other wet areas because the glossy finish was better in damp conditions. But today we also have eggshell paint, which is also quite good in this regard. So where there is paintwork in bathrooms we do best to stick with glossy of eggshell paint finish.

Bathrooms tend to be small. We can make them feel more open by sticking to light colours and avoiding too much fine details. Plain walls with neat trim, or simple tile patterns often look best.

Tiles are ubiquitous in bathrooms, both on floors and on at least part of the walls. This is obviously because of their water resistant properties. Tiles often feature some patterns that can be used creatively for a pleasing decor. Patterns can be anything from marble finish to geometric designs. We should match this the tile design to suit the paint colour.

A contrast between the tiles and the painted walls often works well. One can be strong and the other can be neutral. Consider white tiles with vividly painted walls, or white walls with bold tiles. White tiles with thin bold trim also works well.

Feature wall are sometimes used in upscale bathrooms. This is a wall with a mural or other decorative design.

Curtain or blinds are essential in bathrooms, if only for providing privacy. There need not be anything fancy in the curtains, they just need to suit the rest of the bathroom decor. Often plain curtains work well in a detailed bathroom, and detailed curtains look fine in an otherwise plain room.

A bathmat is a simple addition to any bathroom, providing a soft and resonantly dry floor surface. It is not difficult to match the bathmat to the curtains.
