Most of us can skip the technical details if we just want our home interior painted in a traditional way. But it helps to know the details if we plan to do something different with our home decor
Paint Types:
Acrylic Paint – This is used for most interior painting. It is quick drying and washes out in water. On most internal was surfaces (Gyprock, plaster, timber) is gives very good results as long as the right undercoat is used.
Ceiling White – This is a Matt paint that desists dripping, so it is easier to use on the ceiling.
The Matt finish gives a pleasant soft reflection to light.
Enamel – These give a hard, smooth finish. Newer varieties are water based, for easy cleanup.
Wall Preparation:
Almost every surface requires its own type of undercoat or preparation. This is as important as the final paintwork as proper preparation is required for good paint results.
Undercoat – This is painted directly on the surface to give the right adhesion for the final paint. there are different undercoats for plaster, Gyprock, timber, metal, concrete, brick.
Binder – An undercoat for powdery surfaces.
Sealer – Used for porous surfaces, to prevent the paint from soaking into the material.
Stain blocker – Used to fix surfaces already damaged by water, mould, smoke or other stains. This prevents the surface stains form showing through to the final paint.
Paint Finish
The different colours of paint may have a different surface finish. The different finishes have different advantages.
Matt Paint – Until recently the most common finish on wall and ceilings. This has a slightly chalky texture that reflects light in a pleasant, soft fashion.
Eggshell – This has started to replace the previously popular Matt finish. It has a very similar surface, and similar light reflecting properties, but it is easier to clean as it does not absorb grease or stains.
Gloss – This was very popular for all internal painting a few generations ago. If has a smooth almost mirror finish that is easy to clean. But the glossy surface reflects light in a manner that tend to show any imperfection in the wall.
Gloss finish is still popular for window sills, door frames and trim. It is also used in bathrooms because does not absorb any moisture in the air.
