Paint a Room

House Painting North Shore

Planing and preparation are the best way to start any project. But of course we can’t spend all our time on this. There is both the actual physical work to do, and the fact that our plans don’t always work the way we intend because there are always factors that we haven’t taken into account. Some experience and advice always make the the world of difference. Though with some trial and error we can often get great results, at least on the second attempt.

Plan Your Approuch

Start be considering how you want the final room to look. remember that you are not limited to having all walls the same colour. And that you can change the ceiling paint and floor covering as well if that suit your re-decorating plans.

  • Consider an accent wall in a bold hue.
  • Consider highlighting moldings and contrasting shade.
  • Look at the ceiling colour
  • Look at lighting in the room – you might change this for an improved effect.
  • Take a photo of the room and use computer Photoshop to experiment with some different colour combinations. Remember, this is only a rough guide.

Choose Your Colour(s)

There are multitudes of options, but you can narrow it down by first deciding n a warm or cool shade. Look at the art and furnishing in the room, or that you wish to add afterwards; what colour suits these?
Look at colour contrasts. Colours on the opposite side of the colour wheel are a good start.

Get the Right Tools

  • A decent brush
  • A decent rollar
  • A small ladder
  • Drop cloths for floors
  • Painters tape
  • Cleaning rags
  • Cleaning fluids, like turps or mineral spirits if you are using oil based paints.

Calculate how Much Paint you will Need

The paint tin should tell you the area it will cover. Some paints stretch further than others, but 1 gallon will usually cover 400 square feet; 3 litres of paint covers 36 square meters. Buy about 10% extra over this amount.

Painting

  • Cover Furniture with Drop Cloths
  • Put painters tape on edges to get a sharp edge finish.
  • Stir Paint before each use
  • Do not shake the tin, this causes bubbles that cause problems.
  • If you have several tins of paint they might be of slightly different colours. So combine them into one large tin.
  • Do edges with a brush, and then fill in the main body of the wall with a roller.
  • Wrap brushes in plastic wrap when not in use, when you are doing the roller work.
  • Ventilate the room. Fumes are an issue. Try to buy low VOC paint if possible.

Set aside plenty of time to do the painting, and the clean-up.
