Professional Painting Tricks

It’s the tricks of the trade that allow the experienced painters to get the best results.
- Sand away flaws. you need the perfectly smooth surface if you are to get the perfectly smooth paint finish. This is especially important with glossy paint, which seems to highlight imperfections. Sometimes, perhaps when renovating an old wall, the sanding takes more time than the painting. But it makes the painting job easier later on. It is far harder to remove imperfections after the painting is done.
- The best tools and materials. a good roller lasts for years, as will a set of good brushes. And you won’t have issue with loose bristles being left in the paint. A good brush will leave a smooth finish without brush marks.
- Tinted Primer. Priming the walls is essential when first painting. Without this initial step the final paint will soak into the surface, and the results are terrible. You also need primer if the wall has any gaps filled, lest the repaired section looks different to the rest of the wall.
If the primer is tinted to a similar colour to the final paint then you will only need one coat of final paint to get great results. This is especially important for vivid colours like orange or red. - Cover furniture and floors with tarpaulins or plastic sheets. Canvas tarps are best for floors as they prevent any spilled paint from being tracked around the room.
If you use plastic covers on furniture then tap it secure at the base. - Use painter’s tape on the edges and press it flat with a putty knife. The ensure a clean edge to the paint.
- Paint extender will slow the drying period, so you have a little extra time to overlap areas before they dry. Even better, it prevents brush marks. Read the directions to get the right amount of extender.
- paint each wall in succession. Some painters will do all the edges in a room with a brush first, and then go back and use the roller to fill in the main area. But you can get better results by using the roller right after you have done the edges. The brush paint and the roller paint will blend better when both are still damp.
- If you are painting a large area you probably will use several cans of paint. These may very slightly in colour. we can remove this unevenness by mixing all the cans into one large container.
- Vacuum and wash roller covers and brushes before use. This gets rid of dust and fuzz that would other wise end up on the walls.
- Remove electrical fittings before you paint to give you a neater edge.
- Get yourself a great ladder that lets you reach the right height. This prevents awkwardness and a bad back at the end of the day.
- Buy some bright lights. If the room is well lit you avoid the situation where you miss a spot because it was too dark.
- Dip the bottom 1/2 to 1 inch of the brush in the paint and then tap off the heavy drips. Don’t use any more of the bristle than the bottom inch, and do not wipe paint off the brush.
So not do edges with a full loaded brush as this causes runs. use a freshly loaded brush on an area a few inches away form the edge, and then paint the edge when the brush is partly spent.
