Stop Paint Drying Out

A full can of paint will last for several years. But a half empty can will dry out quite quickly. We can avoid this situation by filling the can with old marbles or golf balls, to take up the space. Or transfer the paint to a smaller container with minimal space inside. Filter the paint when you pour it into the new container.

The Right Undercoat/Primer

Fresh Gyprock (not previously painted) needs a water based primer. This is to prevent the paint from soaking into the Gyprock surface.

Timber usually needs a oil based primer.

If a surface has suffered water or smoke damage it also needs an oil based primer.

Lap Marks

If you paint over any area that has started to dry you can end up with visible lines in the paint – lap marks. Instead, overlap areas whilst they are still wet.

Stirring Paint

A flat stick is not the best way to stir paint. Use an implement with spaces in it, more like a whisk.

Never shake paint cans, this put bubbles in the paint that take time to settle.

Texture

Rollers can have a thin or thick nap, the thickness of the material on the roller. A thin nap will give a smoother finish, which is necessary for glossy finishes. But this type of roller holds less paint.
A thick nap roller will give a pleasant texture to a painted wall surface.

Short Work Breaks

You need to wash brushes and roller after you have finished. But if you need to stop for an hour or two you can wrap the brush/roller in tin foil and store them in a fridge. This only works for latex paints.

Edging Tape

Older painting tape can be hard to peel. Try putting it in the microwave for 10 seconds.
