Questions for Professional house painters Sydney
Which is better, glossy or Matt finish?
Today most people opt for eggshell finish, which is similar in appearance to matt paint but easier to clean.
Older style glossy paint had the advantage of being easy to clean, as it did not absorb grease of moisture. But it did tend to show the imperfections in the wall.
More modern matt paint hid imperfections well, and had a pleasant chalk-like surface. But it was prone to some forms of staining.
Eggshell has the best of both worlds
Will glossy paint make a room hotter?
This appears to be an old wives tale, or an internet rumour. Gloss paint on the internal walls might make a very slight difference to the humidity, and this might have a small effect on the room. But the end result will make little difference.
Can paint designed for the outside be used indoors?
While exterior paint can be used indoors there is no real benefit. The main advantage of exterior paint is the resistance to fading in the Sun, which is hardly a factor indoors. And as we pay extra for this feature so external paint ends up costing more. So interior paint is better suited for the internal rooms, and also less expensive.
You might use exterior paint on a window sill, where there is sunlight. But it would be better to put UV screens on the window glass.
Can I paint over old paint?
Usually you can paint over old paint, but some preparation is needed. The wall surface must first be cleaned with sugar soap (or something similar) to remove grease. Failure to do so will result in flaky or rough paint.
Glossy paint must be roughened up before it is painted over as the new paint will not bond well to a shiny glossy surface.
Is painting the ceiling different?
We use a different type of paint for ceilings. This reduces drips and splatters. Some people like to paint the ceiling first in order to prevent any paint splatter in the walls, though this tend to be rare for professionals painters.
Where should I use gloss paint?
If the room is subjected to moisture, perhaps a bathroom or kitchen, then glossy paint is preferable. Gloss paint will resist moisture and grease stains. But modern eggshell paint also resists moisture and grease staining, so this has recently become popular for all internal walls, including kitchens and bathrooms.
May people like the look of gloss paint on window frames and door trim. Other people prefer bare wood.
