House paint, and paint in general, traditionally came in three types:
• Glossy paint, which has a shiny, mirror finish.
• Matt paint, which has a flat, paper like surface.
• Semi-gloss, which is a less shiny version of glossy paint
The past generation has also had other finish options available, like eggshell, which are considered an improvement.
Glossy paint was once the most popular interior paint option. Many people liked the look of its shiny surface, and it resisted stains because very little would stick to the hard smooth surface. Shiny paint is still popular for items like pianos and some furniture. And many households still use it for trim on windows and doors.
The downside to gloss paint is that is shows any imperfections in the surface. Even the slightest indentation in a flat surface is easily visible in the reflection of a glossy finish. This is far less of an issue with round surfaces (say, a chair or table leg), and less noticeable on small items like skirting boards and trim. Still, it is a limitation for interior house painting.
In some cases the advantages of glossy paint outweighs this limitation. Bathrooms often use glossy paint because of its moisture and stain resisting properties. Kitchens may take the same approach.

A more recent paint option is eggshell finish. This has similar stain and moisture resistant properties to traditional gloss paint, but its surface texture does show imperfections. So it gives the best of both worlds – low stain and smooth, even appearance. It works quite well in wet areas like bathrooms and kitchens.
